Preschool - 3 Years Old
Preschool is often a time when children first interact with their peers on a regular basis, and it might be the first time children can assert their independence away from mom and dad. Holy Cross Academy lets children find the pace and learning styles that works best for them. We know how young minds really work and how learning happens by providing understanding wrapped with rich, engaging content that turns minds on.
Preschool teaches discipline, rules and life lessons such as learning to wait, when and how to take turns, and how to share with others. These practical, hands-on lessons help develop children’s personalities and form the basis of further social interaction, knowledge, self-confidence and future success.
Our Preschool children actively participate in singing songs, playing in sand and water, finger painting, listening at story time and playing games that increase large and small motor skills. They also learn beginning math skills such as sequencing, spatial relationships and identifying patterns and may develop an enhanced awareness of letters and basic reading. Preschool attendance instills in children how important schooling is and Preschool at Holy Cross Academy reinforces what they have learned at home and allows for their personal relationship with God to grow on a daily basis.
Prekindergarten - 4 Years Old
Children who attend our Pre-Kindergarten enter Kindergarten with excellent pre-reading skills, richer vocabularies, and stronger basic math skills than children who don’t attend a pre-Kindergarten program.
Holy Cross Academy will teach children how to be students. Each child will learn how to raise their hand, take turns, and share the teacher's attention. All of this makes for an easier transition to kindergarten. Kindergarten teachers will tell you that the students who are ready to learn are those who come into school with good social and behavior-management skills.
In addition, we help them strengthen their socialization skills -- how to compromise, be respectful of others, and problem-solve and we provide a place where each child can gain a sense of self, explore, play with their peers, and build confidence. Children discover they are capable and can do things for themselves -- from small tasks like pouring their own juice and helping set snack tables to tackling bigger issues like making decisions about how to spend their free time. Our children also think of themselves as independent learners.
We know that children learn best through doing the kinds of activities they find interesting – singing songs, playing in sand and water, finger painting, story time, and talking to their teachers about their expanding world. To help children learn language and strengthen pre-reading skills, our teachers play rhyming games and let kids tell stories. Keep in mind that for small children, school is all about having fun and acquiring social skills -- not achieving academic milestones. Children need to be imaginative and to socialize -- that's what fosters creative, well-rounded people.
Because we are a Catholic school dedicated to enriching the spiritual life of our students, they experience a prayerful, daily routine that reinforces their personal relationship with God. And because we know that you are your child's best teacher and greatest influence, we work with our school families to empower you as their primary teachers of the faith.
